Better Know Your 2010 Jury #32: Adam Bowie July 09 2010

Please share the Top 5 Canadian records you put on your first ballot.

Justin Rutledge The Early Widows
Said The Whale Islands Disappear
Shad TSOL
Bahamas Pink Strat
Amelia Curran Hunter, Hunter

Tell us about your top ranked choice. Why #1?

I picked Justin Rutledge's The Early Widows because I can't stop playing it. It's hauntingly beautiful from the opening drum beats of "Be A Man," to the guitar riffs on "Mrs. Montgomery," to the finger-picking on album closer "All Around The World." I enjoyed his first album No Never Alone, but I think The Early Widows represents real progress for this artist.

What record that's perhaps local or under the radar did you suggest to the jury and/or would like to plug here to the whole world?

I'm not sure if he'd be considered under the radar or not, but I pitched David Myles' latest album: Turn Time Off. It was produced by fellow East Coast songsmith Joel Plaskett and I think it has a lot of beautiful moments. I listened to a lot of great music and really struggled to make my top 5 picks. Eventually, Amelia Curran bumped the Myles disc, Jason Collett's Rat A Tat Tat and Basia Bulat's Heart Of My Own out of my Top 5.

Want to know two great under the radar Fredericton acts? Ross Neilsen & The Sufferin' Bastards and Sleepy Driver!

Describe the state of Canadian music in five words or less:

Creative talent catching global ears? Yeah, that's all I got.

Imagine the tables are turned and you are the nominee: What would you do with the $20,000 prize money?

I would use it to try to convince Joel Plaskett, Old Man Luedecke, Little Miss Higgins, The Weakerthans, and Attack In Black to perform at my upcoming wedding for $4,000 each. Or, a cross-country dive bar tour, searching for next year's Polaris winner.

You're right. Should have said "could", not "should". RT @KLMangan: @PolarisPrize Didn't say that, did he? Said he could be the underdog!
