Tell us about your top ranked choice. Why #1?

A tip from a colleague in Toronto led me to Bruce Peninsula, and for that I am ever-grateful. A Mountain is a Mouth(a wonderful bit of title poetry) is one of the most unique sounding albums I've heard all year. I haven't gone to church in years, but I would reconsider if the services sounded like this. The choral and hymnal influences are pretty clear, and anyone who's had the good fortune of seeing BP live knows that Neil Haverty's growl is as much preacher as it is rock star. The vocal and percussive talent in the band (semi-supergroup is perhaps more apt considering their lineage) scares me. I secretly hoped it might creep into the top ten, but since it didn't I'll simply use this space as a plug for the album. Give it a chance: A Mountain is a Mouth will eat its way into your soul

Reaction to the Short List: Your most pleasant surprise? Shocked by any omissions?

It's hard when top picks don't make the cut, but only because there's a hope that making the Polaris Short List will lead to some greater recognition for these hard-working acts. Since I know what went into the making of the list and how much jurors struggle with their choices, I can't really knock it. Personally, there are albums that I'm happy to see on there (Fantasies is a wonderfully singable album) and others I really don't get (can anyone explain Fucked Up to me...I've clearly missed the boat), but, to riff on what David Dacks said the other day, the whole process is more about getting people talking and passionate about Canadian music than about who does or doesn't make the list.

Describe the state of Canadian music in five words:

CanCon isn't a dirty word.

Imagine the tables are turned and you are the nominee: What would you do with the $20,000 prize money?

Two words: Casino.
