Everything You Need To Know About The 2016 Polaris Music Prize Gala

The 2016 Polaris Short List

The 2016 Polaris Short List

The 2016 Polaris Gala takes place Monday, September 19 at The Carlu in Toronto.

For those of you who can’t attend in person to watch nominees Andy Shauf, Basia Bulat, Black Mountain, Carly Rae Jepsen, Jessy Lanza, U.S. Girls and White Lung perform live (extremely limited tickets still available), there’s still an easy way to view the Gala as long as you’ve got access to ye olde internet…

LIVE STREAM

The Polaris Gala will be streamed live via CBC Music at cbcmusic.ca/polarisprize starting at 8 p.m. ET.

CBC MUSIC’S POLARIS MUSIC PRIMER

But wait, you say, “I don’t feel I know enough about the 10 nominated albums to make an informed decision on which to root for at the Gala.” We’ve got you covered.

CBC-TV will be broadcasting something they’re calling CBC Music’s Polaris Music Primer at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18. It’s a special hosted by Talia Schlanger that’ll give you everything you need to know about the nominees, featuring performances and interviews with Carly Rae Jepsen, Grimes, Basia Bulat and more.

POLARIS PODCAST

For the on-the-go listening types who want to know more, we also have the first-ever episode of the Polaris Podcast. This episode features 10 Polaris jurors from across the country each taking a turn to explain why their favourite nominated album should win.

Listen at the following locations:

Apple/iTunes

Soundcloud

Android/Google Play Music

… and also via the Stitcher app.

POLARIS POSTERS

We commissioned some commemorative posters to honour each nominated album and give them to each album’s respective artists as gifts. They’re like, whoa. And a limited number of them are available for sale through the Polaris Store.

POLARIS PALE ALE AND THE DRAKE HOTEL

We’ve got our own beer. Polaris has teamed up with Beau’s Brewery (they did most of the work) to create Polaris Pale Ale. This beer has been brewed with 40 kilograms of wild-harvested spruce tips, Québec-grown hops, and Ontario wheat and has a mildly peppery flavour with zesty spruce echoes. It will be available for drinking at the Polaris Gala.

Toronto craft beer fans interested in trying the new Polaris Pale Ale will also be able to do so September 19 from 8-11 p.m. while enjoying a Polaris-themed music playlist and a simulcast of the Polaris Gala at Toronto’s Drake Hotel (1150 Queen St. W.). A similar event will be held at the same time and date in Prince Edward County at The Drake Devonshire Inn (Wellington, ON). Beer fans will also be able to enjoy Polaris Pale Ale at a pre-Gala event from 5-7 p.m. at Toronto’s Drake One Fifty (150 York St.).

POLARIS GALA AFTERPARTY

There is an official Polaris Gala afterparty. It is also being held at The Carlu and because everyone who attends the Polaris Gala believes themselves a VIP, everyone attending the Gala is invited. Polaris juror (and Grand Juror that night) Trevor Risk will be DJing the evening and there’ll be a mother humpin’ s’mores station (not a typo).

Also, if you’re the sort of person who’s looking to find small efficiencies in all aspects of your life, Polaris Gala attendees will now be able to buy your drink tickets in advance.
