Artist Bio

Sundar Subramanian is a composer-guitarist hailing originally from Ottawa, living in St. John’s since 2024. His recent live album Live at the Ship was featured on CBC NL’s First Listen. His most recent studio album Opening, which spent five weeks on the station chart of Montreal’s CKUT, is available on Bandcamp as is his 2021 release Electric Currents and a number of smaller releases.

Sundar composes and plays original music for solo guitar with electronic processing, effects and preparations and extended techniques, drawing on modern jazz, Baroque, contemporary classical, progressive and alternative rock, folk and ambient influences in works that balance notated elements with improvisation. His extended techniques have been discussed in the recent book The Techniques of E-Guitar Playing by Seth Josel and Michelle Lou.

Sundar performs regularly in comfortable cafe settings but has also performed original music with electric guitar at events including the Canadian University Music Society’s annual conference, the Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium and the 21st Century Guitar Festival. This work has been commissioned by Vancouver New Music and supported with a grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

Sundar also has a significant catalogue of notated solo and chamber works that have been performed by artists including Hub New Music, Mark Molnar, Madawaska String Quartet, Seth Josel and the Cowan-Cicchillitti Guitar Duo.
