Listen To The Polaris Sound Series: Frequencies Playlist

· by Dooshima Jev

Black lives matter.

This playlist honours the eclectic variety of Black Canadian music, from the Western plains of Alberta to the Eastern shores of Prince Edward Islands. The artists in this playlist will take the listener on an epic sonic journey celebrating previous Polaris nominees. This playlist speaks to the current social unrest awoken by the global Black Lives Matter movement. The mix also shows the range of the Black Canadian experience, where many of our fellow citizens balance on the intersection between two or three cultures.

The playlist kicks off with an acknowledgement by way of electro drumbeat masters A Tribe Called Red and rolls into a soothing presentation made up of appearances from electro dancehall duo Bonjay, Canadian new-soul crooner Zaki Ibrahim, rapper Clairmont The Second, and Afro-Canadian singer-songwriter Pierre Kwenders. A feature from 2019 Polaris winner Haviah Mighty by way of the Toronto-based TOBi also features celebrated hip-hop artist Shad. This mix is an elixir for everybody Black and everybody Canadian.

The world is changing. Black bodies, minds and spirits are calling out for recognition of the realities of Black life in Canada and around the world. It is time to amplify Black voices further. It is time to respect Black musical excellence in our country. It is time to step back and for all to listen.
