Polaris Podcast EP18 Examines 2018 Short List

The 10-album 2018 Polaris Music Prize Short List has arrived. To document this important occasion we gathered three jurors — Ian Steaman, Laura Stanley and Marc-André Mongrain — to weigh in on each album for the Polaris Podcast.

Stanley talked about the gravity behind Jeremy Dutcher’s Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.

“It’s about a lot of things, but one of which is linguistic reclamation. His language, there’s only a couple hundred speakers of it left, and that was of course something that was very concerning,” said Stanley.

Mongrain was taken by the Prince-meets-Bowie vibe of Hubert Lenoir’ Darlène.

“It really has a cool, vintage sound to it, and I think the persona really adds a lot to the record,” said Mongrain.

Daniel Caesar’s Freudian moved Steaman.

“Within two or three listens I was like, ‘This is a really, really special record.’ Kind of a generational record in my mind,” said Steaman.

The Polaris Podcast is available from iTunes, Google Play, Soundcloud, Spotify, and on podcast distribution services such as Acast, Overcast, Stitcher, Pocket Casts, Pod Knife and TuneIn.
