Polaris People For The Week Of March 9 ““ Elliott Brood Hostage Crises, Dan Mangan Puppetry, Wolf Parade Swervedriven And More

The Meteor Choice Music Prize, Ireland’s Polaris brother, recently named Jape its 2011 winner for the “Oceans Of Frequency” album. Likewise, down under The Jezabels have just won the Australian Music Prize for their record “Prisoner. If that doesn’t get you in the mood to start thinking about what’s going to make the 2012 Polaris lists nothing will.

And whoever does make the 2012 Polaris lists will be in good company. They’ll get to say they’re peers with the likes of Dan Mangan, Caribou and Arcade Fire, who all made interesting news this week.

Here’s what happened in the Polaris universe:

The National Parks Project, which features no less than 13 different Polaris-nominated musicians, won a 2012 Genie Award in the Best Short Documentary for ‘Sirmilik.’

2008 Polaris champs Caribou have decided to take Radiohead with them on their upcoming North American tour.

In a very public show of relationship disharmony, CBC Music’s Grant Lawrence recently unveiled his Top 10 Canadian Female Singers and his wife didn’t like her placement on the list compared to various Short- and Long-Listed Polaris women.

Rock ‘n’ roll academics and 2011 Polaris champs Arcade Fire will be presenting “A Lecture on Hope, Haiti, & Service” at the University of Texas on March 19.

Record Store Day is coming on April 21 and Polaris names like Arcade Fire and Destroyer will be busting out the rare business. Also, there’s going to be some weird Feist-Mastodon thing.

Two-time Short List nominee K’naan doesn’t think Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney should use the songs of poor artists for his campaign. Mostly because the poor don’t matter to Romney.

Plants And Animals, they of the 2008 Short List nomination, recently talked to the Montreal Mirror about new album ‘The End Of That.’ It’s a breakup record.

In the latest news about The Weeknd, he’s headlining the Pitchfork stage at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, Spain. Also, Weeknd producer Illangelo has worked on a new track with TALWST.

Damian Abraham from 2009 Polaris champs Fucked Up was a guest for Danko Jones’ recent podcast. The resulting conversation was the somewhat straight-edge hardcore equivalent of a giggly girl gossip party.

Elliott Brood members aren’t faring well in hostage scenarios, Dan Mangan band members are going through a puppet phase, and Tegan And Sara have another series of confessions.

Adam Franklin from Swervedriver is covering a Wolf Parade song, Andre William has another song out with The Sadies, and Cadence Weapon has given us “Loft Party.”
