Arkells Cover Owen Pallett’s ‘I Am Not Afraid’ For Polaris Cover Sessions #4
Arkells have covered Owen Pallett’s “I Am Not Afraid” for the latest edition of the Polaris Cover Sessions.
Performed and filmed at Toronto’s Revolution Recording (Rush, Lights, Ghostface Killah w/ BadBadNotGood and more) the Arkells’ take on the song from Pallett’s 2014 Polaris Short-Listed album In Conflict is the fourth in the ongoing series of Polaris cover sessions which pair past Polaris nominees reimagining the songs of other former nominees.
Arkells, who’ve been Polaris Long List-nominated in 2009 for the album Jackson Square and in 2015 for High Noon, enlisted a two-person horn section to give their rendition of “I Am Not Afraid” a little extra something.
Vinyl enthusiasts and fans of the Arkells should stay tuned to the usual Polaris bat channels as there’s a high probability the band’s version of “I Am Not Afraid” will be getting pressed up into some form of promotional vinyl release in 2016 by the good folks at Samo Media. Right now a promotional 10″ record featuring the first three Polaris Cover Sessions — Whitehorse performing The New Pornographers’ “Bones Of An Idol,” Sarah Harmer performing Caribou’s “Odessa” and Great Lake Swimmers performing Sarah Harmer’s “I’m A Mountain” — is available for free at select record stores across Canada with the purchase of an album from the 2015 Polaris Music Prize Short List.
