Polaris People For The Week Of June 14: Long List Reaction

· by Aaron Brophy

We revealed the 2013 Polaris Music Prize Long List earlier this week.

It’s kind of a big deal.

It also means we’ve now entered into the Great Polaris Debateâ„¢ phase of our annual quest to determine the best Canadian album released this year.

The lack of a true jazz album on the Long List has been noticed in some quarters.

Elsewhere, the absence of Serena Ryder is causing others to call into question “the validity of the entire award.”

Over at Vulture they kinda, sorta made it about Justin Bieber. (Sly.)

And even a couple of charter Polaris People got in on the pile-on.

That’s OK, Owen Pallett, the 2006 champ and one of our presenters at the Long List reveal in Montreal, supports the acts who made it.

The folks at Toronto record store Soundscapes have our back, too. (Go buy something from them.)

Meanwhile, the actual people who made the Long List have have been weighing in on being part of the exclusive club of Polaris People. We tracked down a bunch of their Twitter reactions.

Finally, check out the YouTube playlist we made of the Long List.
