The 2012 Short List Is Here

· by Aaron Brophy

The 2012 Polaris Short List was announced today (July 17) at The Drake Hotel in Toronto, ON.

Polaris Founder and Executive Director Steve Jordan was pretty excited about the List.

“Our jury is showing an ever growing passion and dedication to reviewing, discussing and advocating their selections. This has resulted in a Short List of records that are musically focused, intense and in some cases highly personal. The process of selecting a winner should prove to be an invigorating challenge for our Grand Jury.”

Here is the 2012 Polaris Music Prize Short List:

Cadence Weapon — Hope In Dirt City
Cold Specks — I Predict A Graceful Expulsion
Drake — Take Care
Kathleen Edwards — Voyageur
Feist — Metals
Fucked Up — David Comes To Life
Grimes — Visions
Handsome Furs — Sound Kapital
Japandroids — Celebration Rock
YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN — YT//ST

The 200+ writers, editors, producers and media figures who make up the Polaris Music Prize jury pool chose the Short List by submitting ballots listing their Top 5 albums from the previously announced Long List of 40 eligible albums.

Now it’s on to the big show, the Polaris Gala, being held in Toronto on September 24, where a Grand Jury made up of 11 Polaris jurors will be sequestered Papal conclave-style until they decide which one of the 10 Short List albums will be declared the best Canadian album of 2012.

To celebrate this year’s Short List our friends at RDIO will once again be hosting the Polaris Record Club starting in August. The Polaris Gala will be broadcast through our partners at Sirius XM and MuchMusic.
