Artist Bio

Allen Dobb is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose music blends the soul of country, folk, and roots traditions with a modern, literate edge. Praised by the Edmonton Journal as “one of the finest and most literate tunesmiths in this country,” Dobb crafts songs that resonate with authenticity and a deep sense of place.

Raised on a farm near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Dobb’s earliest musical influences came through a single CBC television channel and country radio. Don Messer’s Jubilee and artists like Gordon Lightfoot and John Denver shaped his formative years, while family gatherings around his grandfather’s piano sparked a lifelong love of music. By age 13, he had his first guitar and was performing at local talent shows. At 16, he was playing underage in lounges and bars, already sensing that songwriting would become his calling.

Dobb’s path has never been ordinary. After college in Wyoming and Washington State, he spent several years working in Lesotho, Southern Africa, where he immersed himself in local culture and music. These experiences enriched his songwriting vision and led to collaborations with African musicians, including members of the legendary band Sankomota. Later, Dobb’s travels took him to Austin, Texas, where he busked on 6th Street and recorded his first studio demos.

Returning to Canada, Dobb settled in Vancouver and formed the roots band Dobb and Dumela, which toured extensively across Canada and the U.S., performing at major folk festivals such as Edmonton, Winnipeg, Mariposa and the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle. The band released two albums: One Drop and Riverboat Free.

As a solo artist, Dobb has released a series of well-regarded albums, including Horses and Hills (1998), Bottomland (2002), and Rosetown (2004). His 2024 release, Alone Together, earned critical praise for its heartfelt songwriting and rich acoustic textures. Americana Highways called his songs “heart searching and touching, strong and vibrant and easy to listen to,” while Adventures in Americana described the album as “a soundtrack to a full life.”

Dobb’s new album, The Afterlife Sessions (2026), marks a return to his acoustic roots. Recorded live at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios—the modern incarnation of the iconic Mushroom Studios—the album is an all-acoustic, all-strings project and showcases Dan Fremlin (mandolin), Ryland Moranz (banjo, acoustic guitar), Rob Becker (upright bass), and Trent Freeman (fiddle). “In a time when everyone is talking about AI in music, this project couldn’t be further away from that,” says Dobb. “We just put up the microphones and played.”
