Fucked Up Covers Eric’s Trip’s “Sunlight” For SiriusXM Polaris Cover Sessions

Fucked Up have reimagined Eric’s Trip’s “Sunlight” for the latest SiriusXM Polaris Cover Sessions.

Former Polaris Music Prize winners Fucked Up have reimagined Eric’s Trip’s “Sunlight” for the latest edition of the SiriusXM Polaris Cover Sessions.

In this performance Fucked Up’s Sandy Miranda and Damian Abraham invert the dynamic of the original version with Miranda assuming the lead vocal role of Eric’s Trip’s Rick White and Abraham taking on Julie Doiron’s supporting harmonies.

A frenetic Fucked Up video performance of the song is now available on the Polaris YouTube and Facebook channels. For those seeking an audio experience, the cover can be heard on the Polaris Soundcloud channel.

The “Sunlight” video was shot and directed by Daniel Tal, and edited by Sam Iannicelli.

Fucked Up’s adaptation is the third of five Cover Sessions planned for 2023, featuring past Polaris nominees interpreting songs from Canadian icons. Fucked Up won the Polaris Music Prize in 2009 for their album The Chemistry Of Common Life. They also made the Polaris Short List in 2012 for the album David Comes to Life and the Polaris Long List in 2019 for Dose Your Dreams. Eric’s Trip’s 1993 album Love Tara received Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize designation in 2017. Eric’s Trip member Julie Doiron has had two separate solo albums receive Polaris nominations in the past — Woke Myself Up, which made the Polaris Short List in 2007, and I Thought Of You, which made the Polaris Long List in 2022.

The remaining two 2023 Cover Sessions will be released in advance of this year’s Polaris Gala event happening September 19, 2023 at Toronto’s Massey Hall. Tickets for the Polaris Gala are on sale now.

In total, 20 separate Cover Sessions have been commissioned by Polaris. Other acts who’ve contributed to the series include Rae Spoon, Zoon, Kaia Kater, Corb Lund, Partner, Faith Healer, Pierre Kwenders, Jean-Michel Blais, Lindi Ortega, Weaves, Little Scream, Hannah Georgas, Les soeurs Boulay, Joel Plaskett, Zaki Ibrahim, Whitehorse, Sarah Harmer, Great Lake Swimmers and Arkells. These performances are available on the Polaris YouTube and Soundcloud channels.
