Joel Plaskett Covers Feist’s ‘Bittersweet Melodies’ For Polaris Cover Sessions #5
Joel Plaskett has covered Feist’s “Bittersweet Melodies” for the latest edition of the Polaris Cover Sessions.
Performed and filmed at Plaskett’s own New Scotland Yard Studio (Old Man Luedecke, Mo Kenney, Colleen Brown) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Plaskett’s take on the song from Feist’s 2014 Polaris Music Prize-winning album Metals is the fifth in the ongoing series of Polaris Cover Sessions which feature past Polaris nominees reimagining the songs of other former nominees.
“I love her record Metals, which was nominated and won the Polaris Prize, deservedly so,” said Plaskett in the video for the cover song. “I’m trying to make it sound like Joel Plaskett covering Feist covering the Bee Gees covering Feist.”
Plaskett’s no stranger to Polaris, having been nominated for the award on four separate occasions. He made the Short List in 2007 for his Ashtray Rock album and in 2009 for Three, and the Long List in 2012 and 2015 for Scrappy Happiness and The Park Avenue Sobriety Test, respectively.
To create “Bittersweet Melodies” Plaskett was joined by Erin Costelo on Rhodes and backing vocals. Thomas Stajcer (Alex Cuba, David Myles, Shotgun Jimmie) was responsible for the recording and Plaskett did the producing.
Other songs in the Polaris Cover Sessions include Whitehorse performing The New Pornographers’ “Bones Of An Idol,” Sarah Harmer performing Caribou’s “Odessa,” Great Lake Swimmers performing Sarah Harmer’s “I’m A Mountain” and Arkells doing Owen Pallett’s “I Am Not Afraid.” Last year Polaris teamed up with Samo Media to produce a special promotional 10″ record featuring the Whitehorse, Sarah Harmer and Great Lake Swimmers sessions.
Cover Session are presented by SiriusXM Canada.
